In 2007, the Virginia General Assembly created a special state organization to bring area leaders together to recommend ways to improve health and health related prosperity in the far Southwest Virginia region. This organization is the Southwest Virginia Health Authority (SVHA).

SVHA serves the Lenowisco and Cumberland Plateau Planning Districts.

SVHA is led by a board of directors that includes Virginia legislators, nominal members and one appointed member from each participating locality.
